Five Memphis artists receive inaugural ArtsAccelerator grants

    Staff, Memphis Business Journal
Five Memphis-area artists are the first recipients of ArtsAccelerator grants, created earlier this year by ArtsMemphis to help working artists in the field of visual arts.
The winning recipients are Ben Butler, Mary Jo Karimnia, Susan Maakestad, Brandon Marshall and Terri Phillips. Their funded projects include a community-based mural project in Orange Mound, new studio space to create larger works, an exploration of new ways of making sculptural forms, and performance art. Each artist will receive a $3,000 ArtsAccelerator grant to fund his or her project. All ArtsAccelerator projects will be completed by August 2014.
ArtsAccelerator grants are designed to help local artists who are at a critical point in their work offset expenses related to a specific project that will enhance their overall work or career. The grants support works of painting, sculpture, drawing, installation art, performance art, video or media art and crafts.
The five were chosen from 69 Memphis-area artists who applied for the first ArtsAccelerator grants.
