A family of restaurants with locations in Colorado and Illinois has inked two leases in Memphis.
Kimbal Musk and Hugo Matheson, of The Kitchen, will open a community bistro in the Heart of the Park development in the same building as the FedEx Event Center at Shelby Farms Park and a community pub in the Crosstown Concourse.
The Kitchen will start serving at Shelby Farms Park in 2016, and The Kitchen Next Door will debut in the Crosstown Concourse in 2017. The Kitchen was founded in 2004 in Boulder, Colorado, and places and emphasis on “farm fresh, local food.”
The Kitchen Next Door will be housed in the southeast corner of the Crosstown Concourse near the atrium entrance and occupy roughly 4,500 square feet. An outdoor patio, brick walls and items from the old Sears are some of the planned design elements.
“Memphis is a vibrant and diverse city that is on the verge of a Real Food renaissance,” Musk said in a release. “We are more than thrilled to be part of that movement by investing in the Crosstown and Shelby Farms Park developments.”
The Kitchen Community, the restaurant brand’s nonprofit organization, launched 100 Learning Gardens in Memphis across the Shelby County, Jubilee Catholic Schools and Achievement School Districts on April 7.
Musk, earned his fortune in 1999 when he and brother Elon sold their company Zip2 for more than $300 million. Musk then attended cooking school and eventually founded The Kitchen with Matheson. Musk serves on the board for Tesla Motors, SpaceX, The Anschutz Health and Wellness Center and Chipotle Mexican Grill.
Matheson once worked at London's well-known The River Cafe and has cooked alongside Ruth Rodgers, Rose Gray and Jamie Oliver.

The Kitchen has received praise from Food & Wine Magazine, Gourmet and the James Beard Foundation. Now, Memphians will get to see what it is all about.
